Moonreach Avanti

Moonreach Avanti prides itself on setting and achieving the very highest of standards for the young people residing with us. We are creative and proactive in providing quality standards of care and education that meet the individual needs of our young people. It is our belief that residential child care is a positive choice for many young people.

Our primary aims are to offer stability and consistency, enable the young people to develop trust and confidence, and give them the opportunity to develop and grow by working closely with their care plan. The Moonreach Avanti placement plans are devised as a tool to meet the identified needs of the young person and to aid their transition and development through to adulthood and independence.

The cycle of ongoing assessment, monitoring, evaluation, and review will identify the support and provision required to ensure the young person is able to make progress in all their highlighted areas of need. This can also be achieved by setting tangible and realistic targets that are measurable and monitored closely by staff and management.

Our Ethos

Moonreach’s philosophy of care reflects in the deep belief that young people have the right to be cared for in a safe, stable, and secure environment. The provider, manager, and staff at Moonreach Avanti will endeavour to oversee and ensure a positive living experience for each young person placed. Our aim is to provide care that will promote the emotional and physical wellbeing of the individual and give the young person time to come to terms with the difficulties in their lives, reflect, and move towards a more positive future.

Regular house meetings and key working sessions take place, enabling aspects of reflection and the ability to take responsibility for their own actions and contributions. We have come to realise these interactions are essential for the growth and development of all children and young people, as most have presented problems at referral stage that include the inability to relate at an acceptable level within a peer group. All our young people are treated equally and fairly, so issues of rivalry, jealousy, and anti-social behaviour are addressed within the group and in such a way that they are de-personalised.

Our aim is to help stabilise and support a young person, as we recognise moving into a care setting or a transition into another home can be extremely traumatic. We offer a child-centred approach, identifying individual needs and devising a structured plan to meet and address these needs.

Moonreach Avanti focuses on the ongoing development of life and social skills, preparing our young people for independent living, equipping them with confidence and knowledge, and empowering them to eventually move on within the community as soon as they feel able and confident in doing so. Any problems, difficulties, or challenges identified during the stay at Moonreach Avanti are addressed, and the young person is taught skills that may be used to help deal with these situations.

We aim to ensure that all young people are able to achieve positive outcomes from their stay with us at Moonreach Avanti. We take a holistic approach to the care of our young people; their individual needs are identified and tangible goals and targets are set to address issues, teach new skills, and address behavioural problems.

Admission Process

Emergency Placements

  • Moonreach Avanti will only accept emergency admissions based upon the information provided, assessing the possible risk of the impact upon the other young person placed and solely at the manager and her team’s discretion.
  • Our primary concern immediately upon admission is to settle the young person into their new surroundings.
  • Within 24 hours, we develop an initial care plan, which is finalised within seven days of an emergency admission.
  • It is a prerequisite of any emergency admission that formal arrangements are already in place for a full and formal medical assessment of the young person within 24 hours of their admission.
  • Upon emergency admission, Moonreach Avanti’s standard, non-emergency admission processes as described will apply.
  • All emergency referrals will be risk assessed, taking into consideration any young person already in placement. Risk assessments will be made in light of residents already in place within the home. All staff have knowledge and awareness of risk assessments.

  1. Telephone contact from placing social worker.
  2. During conversation, it will be initially identified if Moonreach Avanti is potentially an appropriate placement.
  3. A referral form is sent and the social worker agrees to complete the form and send all relevant information, including the most recent review minutes or core assessment.
  4. The potential referral is discussed within the staff team.
  5. Once the completed referral form is received, the placing social worker and young person will be invited to visit the home. The social worker will take a copy of the child or young person’s guide with them to discuss the home.
  6. A potential new placement will only be discussed with the young person already in placement when mutual agreement is reached between the placing social worker and the staff team that Moonreach Avanti is appropriate.
  7. The manager offers to visit the social worker at the appropriate offices and discuss timescales, overnight stays, and funding etc.
  8. On placement, a key worker will be identified and the social worker will be able to liaise directly with them regarding the young person.
  9. A placement plan meeting will be required to take place within seven days, and a review will be held within the first month to assess progress. This meeting will take place at a mutually convenient location to all parties. At the meeting, there will be a request for a commitment from the social worker to visit on a regular basis.

Summary

Our minimum requirements of accepting an emergency placement are as follows:

  • The Moonreach Avanti referral form is completed in full.
  • The placing authority referral form is completed in full.
  • Up-to-date placing authority’s risk assessment.
  • Consideration given to the needs of the young person already in placement.

Preparing for Independence

Standard School Programme

Moonreach Avanti has a close professional relationship with Brewood School, who are able to offer a standard in-school programme catering for both key stage 3 and 4. This includes an individually tailored education package for each student, covering English, maths, science, ICT, PSHE, sex and relationships education, and beliefs and values as core subjects. In addition, Brewood offers in-school, one-to-one support for students who need additional help emotionally, psychologically, or academically. This support is both in and out of the classroom and is reviewed regularly.

Outbound Programme

Brewood’s outbound programme runs within the standard school programme but offers education on an off-site, one-to-one basis in a variety of educational settings. The difference with this provision is that the student does not have to engage in a classroom setting, but is instead taken to a range of libraries, study centres, and in-home settings to learn.

Virtual School Programme

On the virtual school programme, students will be given an introduction to the course and how to access and complete assignments set for them. This will be held in their home environment with the intervention officer. The curriculum will be provided in the core areas of English, maths, science, and ICT, as well as the ASDAN short courses in PSHE, sex and relationships education, and beliefs and values.

Once the student has engaged and started to see attainment in these initial areas, we will open up further optional courses, such as:

History – Geography – Media – Performing Arts – Business Studies – Art – Woodwork – Animal Care – Languages – Health and Social Care – Religious Studies – Sports and Fitness – Food Technology – Environmental Award

Pupils will be set weekly lessons to follow and tasks to complete, which will be submitted via email or post dependent on the nature of the activity.

Next Steps Life Skills and Training

The young people within our care have access to Next Steps, who provide AQA unit award packages. Next Steps offers unit awards which develop life skills and support education and preparation for work, as well as independent living and the promotion of self-awareness and confidence. The units focus on:

Budgeting – Moving on – Preparation for Work – Volunteering – Food and Nutrition – Personal
Hygiene and Body Awareness – Health and Hygiene in the Home – Home and Personal Safety – Practical Life Skills – Sexual Health and Healthy Relationships – Fun and Interests – Self-Esteem and Emotional Wellbeing – Bullying Awareness

All young people at Moonreach Avanti are supported and encouraged to develop their skills in preparation for moving on. If the young person’s educational placement is at Brewood School, Moonreach Avanti will work closely with the school to provide a wide range of workshops, courses, and programmes. Moonreach Avanti works with young people to develop their confidence and skill set to manage all financial and additional responsibilities, ensuring that the young people are given every opportunity to succeed in adult life. Moonreach Avanti uses the ‘Get Ready for Adult Life’ workshop programme, which targets a wide variety of workshops and practical exercises to support a young person’s understanding and development. Moonreach Avanti can also identify areas where the development of a young person needs additional support and personalise an independent programme to suit the individual needs of the young person.

Therapeutic Support

Moonreach Avanti outsources professional therapist involvement from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) and/or independent therapists. Moonreach Avanti ensures that all external agencies and individuals hold the same values as us. Additionally, Moonreach Avanti maintains good communication between the home and therapeutic professionals working with the young people, striving to achieve positive outcomes for the young people. This includes involving therapists in staff meetings and multi-professional meetings regarding the young people, where required. Individuals that work directly with the young people must have a full DBS check completed prior to visiting, while they all hold qualifications accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

The House

the house

Moonreach Avanti is one of a number of Moonreach properties that lie in close proximity to each other on quiet, residential roads in the seaside town of Deal, Kent. Moonreach Avanti is an end-terraced family house organised over two floors in Walmer, just east of Deal town centre. It offers homely and family-orientated accommodation for two young people. The interior is comfortable, bright, and modern throughout, offering two spacious double bedrooms, one large lounge, and gardens to the front and the rear of the property.

The town of Walmer lies on the English Channel, eight miles north-east of Dover and approximately 20 miles from the historic city of Canterbury. There are also good educational facilities, including nearby colleges and universities, as well as good transport links via high-speed trains and motorways.

Deal has plenty to offer young people, with good local amenities, including a leisure centre with an indoor swimming pool, a recreational park, a pier, and lots of clubs and community activities, such as the Deal Carnival, which is held in the summer and is popular with the residents.
